Inside Engrenages consisted in designing and developing a transmedia experience in order to:

  • position Canal+ as a leader in the emerging transmedia segment and in this way reinforce its image as an innovative media group
  • introduce the "Spiral" ("Engrenages") series to a wider audience

Production and Methodology

  • Project management, coordination of the contributors with the production and Canal+
  • Mobilising a game designer and the series writers using brainstorming and successive repetitions to define the principles of the experience: Internet interface, narration methods, etc.
  • Formalising the functional and editorial design of the experience (interface, content and dummy blog), wireframes and graphic models.
  • Creating the experience: post-production of content following filming, finalising the models and game principles, planning developments and the formula.

An accessible, immersive Internet experience to:

  • win over fans of the series (40-50 years old, not very tech-savvy)
  • recruit new fans from a younger, more tech-savvy public

Completely new, quality content:

  • Special filming for transmedia (during the shoot of Series 4). The experience will reveal a new plot in the series in a truly innovative format

A different viewpoint from that of the TV series:

  • The characters are filmed in their daily lives by a reporter who has obtained permission to follow Captain Berthaud’s team for seven days. This enables fans of the series to discover the characters in a new light (confessions, speaking directly to the audience, etc.)

An innovative narrative method:

  • Browsing is structured around exploring content in various formats (video, photo, sound and documents).
  • Destructuring and delinearising the content, compared to the series' traditional format, also allows players to explore the plot in their own way, in whatever order (or disorder) they want.
